ADU
Also known as: Accessory Dwelling Unit, Granny Flat, In-Law Unit
An Accessory Dwelling Unit is a secondary housing unit on a single-family residential lot. California law has significantly restricted HOA ability to prohibit ADUs, aligning with state policy to increase housing supply. While HOAs may impose reasonable standards on ADU design, they generally cannot prevent owners from building ADUs that comply with local zoning ordinances and state ADU laws.
